Welcome to summer student Mitchel
Welcome to summer student Mitchel Martin Downie who is studying at Quest University. Martin will be working with us on a variety of projects this summer, and this photo was taken of him helping out at the RMOW free waste disposal days over the long weekend. Mitchel was helping community members separate invasive plants and cedar from their clean yard waste to dispose of in a separate bin. You should never compost invasive plants since that is one way they can be spread. All year long there is a safe invasive disposal bin at the Whistler transfer station.

New data may indicate that one previously described species actually includes two or more separately evolving groups, each of which could justifiably be recognized as a separate species. Thanks.

While all species compete to survive, invasive species appear to have specific traits or specific combinations of traits that allow them to outcompete native species. In some cases the competition is about rates of growth and reproduction. In other cases species interact with each other more directly. Thanks.

Traditionally, multiple examples of a proposed species must be studied for unifying characters before it can be regarded as a species. It is generally difficult to give precise taxonomic rankings to extinct species known only from fossils. Thank you.
